Teaching Session #13 - 8 July 2018

The Book of Daniel
Main speaker - Peter Guinness
Leader for the evening - David Wilkins

David writes:
Everybody knows all the famous stories from the book of Daniel. The four men in the fiery furnace, the king forced to eat grass like a cow and how could we forget Daniel in the Lion’s Den. But when it comes to the rest of the book we tend to stop reading. The rest of it is quite complicated and confusing, including the prophecies in chapter 2, and the far more puzzling ones that take up half of the book. These include the "Son of Man" in Chapter 7, the repeated theme of four kingdoms (chapter 2 and the rock growing into a mountain), and the seventy weeks prophecy of Daniel chapter 9. And then there’s the final section, the most incomprehensible bit...

What does this all mean? And is it even relevant? Peter Guinness and I will attempt to provide an answer to these questions. Always remembering that at the heart of the story of Daniel is a man taken away from his nation, his whole identity taken away from him, still trusting in God and clinging to Him when all else was gone. The name Daniel means “God is my judge.” A fact that encouraged Daniel to confront the most powerful kings in the known world, and to prophesy concerning the return to Jerusalem, and the coming of the Messiah.
